On Being Seen

Photographer Lauren Hanussak gravitated toward her first camera at just 12 years old. As an introverted empath, she found that the camera provided a medium with which she could connect with and better understand the people and places around her, while still remaining at a comfortable enough distance so as to embody that of an observer more than that of an active participant.

She often finds herself returning to this liminal space of desiring, yet also fearing, visibility; wanting to take up space, yet retreating to the comforts of the sidelines.

Utilizing the obstruction of faces, a muted palate, and the raw natural landscape, Lauren visually explores the tension and vulnerability required in breaking free from self-imposed restrictions, and allowing herself to be fully seen.

All of the subjects featured are artists, because artistry is often the truest form of self expression.
